What if Muhammad Ali never became a Muslim, never changed his name, and never refused to enter the draft due to religious beliefs? Would he still be remembered the same? Of course people would have different memories of him, but would as many people know him? Would you still collect his autograph? Would I? One thing that drew me to Ali was the story of Ali, his life story is just as great as the boxer himself. From a kid who had his bike stolen to the greatest boxer of all time.
Just about everyone knows who Ali is and what he has done in his life. There are several movies about him, multiple books, and dozens of documentaries that can tell you everything you want to know about him. If Ali didn’t have that story would he be just another boxer? Unless you’re a boxing fan or collector, how much do you really know about Joe Frazier, George Foreman (better known as ‘the grill guy’), Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, or Leon Spinks? The average person may only know some of those names and nothing about them other than they were fighters. I can’t tell you how many times that someone told me about that photo of Ali standing over “that guy” (Talking about Liston). Would Ali be “that guy”?
I am thankful to Ali that he did what he did. It made me take notice and appreciate him. Love him, hate him, or anywhere in between there is no other person that is known worldwide like him. He isn’t perfect, nobody is, but he’s definitely “The Greatest”.
